The Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) released a statement on the Turkish bombing of the People’s Council building in the Khanasor town of the Yazidi settlement Shengal (Sinjar) in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) on December 11.
The attack came shortly after the targeted killing of Shengal Autonomous Administration Executive Council Co-Chair Merwan Bedel in a Turkish drone attack in Khanasor on December 7.
Remarking that the Turkish state is using UAVs against the will of the Yazidi community, TEV-DEM stressed that these attacks constitute a war crime, saying, “These attacks are a consequence of Baghdad and Hewler (Erbil) ignoring and denying the will of the Yazidis who fought the most against the terrorist organizations in Iraq and freed their territory from terror for the first time in Iraq.”
The statement continued, “For this very reason, the Turkish state tries to complete and revive what was left behind by ISIS terror. The Iraqi government and the KDP remain silent on Turkey’s fascist policies against the will of the Yazidi community, raising doubts over a possible handover of the Shengal dossier to Turkish occupation.”
TEV-DEM pointed out that this situation constitutes a threat for the future safety of Iraq and South Kurdistan and continued, “The Turkish state tries to occupy the land between two rivers as per the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli) in the same way it invaded Kurdistan and Syrian territories. Maintaining their silence on Turkey’s massacres in Medya Defense Zones and Shengal, both governments fail to stand against Turkish fascism and they act as the partners of Turkey’s dirty policies.
The terrorist attacks of the Turkish state that are directed at the will and values of the Yazidi community will never defeat the resistance of the Shengal people. These attacks only strengthen the Shengal people’s persistence in resistance. The Turkish occupation has been increasing its attacks by taking advantage of the silence of the international community. These attacks, which target the peace and security of Shengal, enable the return of ISIS.
We as TEV-DEM call on all political powers, legal and human rights organisations to take action against the Turkish state’s dangerous politics.
The UN and affiliated institutions would be responsible for a Turkish massacre against Yazidis.
We call on the Kurdish people and the Yazidi community to rise up and enhance the resistance against the crimes of the Turkish state.”
