TEV-DEM protests isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan

Members of the Euphrates Canton Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) Assembly read a press statement protesting the absolute isolation imposed on Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan in Kobanê.

The statement was read in Şehit Egîd Square by the Teachers' Union co-chair Narîn Xelîl Muslim. TEV-DEM called for solidarity, emphasizing that demands for human rights and freedoms should be supported worldwide.

Narîn Xelîl Muslim said that the isolation practices of the Turkish state on Abdullah Öcalan and other prisoners in Imrali violated Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and international human rights laws.

Muslim said: "These oppressive and immoral attacks clearly show the hatred and defeat of the fascist regime. Turkish fascism is trying to break the will of the people in the person of Öcalan with special warfare methods. This fascism poses a threat not only to the Middle East but to the entire world. However, Öcalan's philosophy and ideas can be implemented against this threat to solve the crises in the region."

Muslim criticized the silence of the United Nations and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) for the practices against Abdullah Öcalan.

The statement said: "This attitude of the UN and the CPT shows the hypocrisy of international standards and the fact that the Turkish state supports the absolute isolation and attacks on the Kurdish people."

The statement condemned isolation and disciplinary punishments and called on all freedom defenders, human rights organizations and legal institutions to put pressure on the Turkish state.

Muslim said: "We must fulfill our duties and further expand the struggle to ensure Öcalan's physical freedom."
