Turkey turns M4 highway into a “death road”

The Turkish army bombed the M4 highway, the villages of Xalidiye, Hoşan, Mielek, and the Ain Issa Camp with heavy weapons last night, targeting civilians and their vehicles.

Mamed Barkel from Kobanê, one of the drivers using the M4 highway, condemned the Turkish attack and Russia, which acts as guarantor state. “We are not satisfied with the presence of Russia in our regions. Russia is silent in the face of the Turkish state's crimes and attacks against us,” he said.

The Raqqa-Hesekê and the M4 highway between Til Temir and Kobani is the shortest road, used by the elderly, children and patients, Mamed Barkel said.

Barkel stated that the M4 highway has turned into a “death road”, saying, “The invading Turkish army and its mercenaries directly target civilians who use this road. The Russian forces have military bases along the road. They constantly patrol the Euphrates region and the international road. However, Russia remains silent towards Turkish crimes. We are not satisfied with the existence of Russia. Even though it is a guarantor state in the region, it cannot protect civilians from the attacks of the invading Turkish state.”

The M4 highway is one of the most important commercial roads in Syria. The road which is of strategic importance to the peoples of North and East Syria, connects both regions. For this reason, the  Turkish state has been trying to control the M4 highway to invade the entire region since it has occupied Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain) and Girê Spî (Tal Abyad).
