Photographers in North East Syria unite in new association

Photographers organized themselves under the ‘Syrian Photographers Association’ and held their founding assembly to make their voices heard.

Members of the Syrian Photographers Association held their founding assembly at the Baylesan Hall in Amudê, Qamishlo, after 6 months of preparatory work.

Autonomous Administration, Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM), representatives of Kurdish National Union Parties (PYNK) and press institutions joined the assembly.

Speaking there, Democratic Society Movement co-chair Zelal Cîger positively evaluated the continuing work of photographers and their decision to unite in a more structured way.

Cîger, drawing attention to the war and the struggle developed to counter the war in the regions of North and East Syria, said: “Photography is a work of art. Occupation attempts continue every day. A photograph taken is a proof of the war and of the resistance against that war."

Cîger added: "The writer brings the truth to light with his pen, poem, book, the painter with his paintings, and the photographer with his photographs."

Cizre Region Legislative Council co-chair, Arya Mele Mihemmed, said: “Our photographer friends pursued truth, sweated and paid a price to bring that truth to light under all circumstances. They joined the war fronts without hesitation. They became the voice of the people. They showed great courage and continued to take their photos bravely.”

After the speeches, the charter program of the Syrian Photographers Association consisting of 45 articles was read. A Board of Directors consisting of 7 people was elected.
