Co-mayor of Muş: We govern the city with women

Co-Mayor of Muş Municipality Tuba Sayılgan stated that they will implement many projects from women's employment to counselling centres and said that they govern the city together with women.

The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), which won the Muş Municipality by a large margin in the 31 March local elections, accelerated its work for women in the city. Co-Mayors Tuba Sayılgan and Sırrı Söylemez are sensitive to the demands of women and try to meet their needs.

Speaking to ANF, Co-Mayor Tuba Sayılgan noted that throughout the history of the Republic, Muş Municipality was run by the ruling parties. She said, “For the first time, the DEM Party won the municipality with the co-presidency system. We want to emphasise the co-presidency system in particular. We have achieved a great success in order to break the perception that “a municipality cannot be won by a woman”. After taking over the municipality, we started to explain the co-presidency system to the people of Muş.”

Pointing to the importance of the co-presidency system, Tuba Sayılgan continued: “The co-presidency system was adopted and embraced by the people of Muş. The fact that women in Muş have someone with whom they can share their problems gave hope to women. With this system, we manage the city with women to meet women's counselling, solidarity, psychological and economic needs. Co-presidency is an indispensable achievement for us, and we will manage the city by strengthening it together with women in Muş.”

Sayılgan stated that they have opened the doors of the municipality to the public since the day they took office and that women can easily convey their needs and demands: “There is a serious problem of women's employment in Muş. We cannot see women in public spaces and in many sectors. We promised to share all the facilities of the municipality equally between men and women. We have started working on our ‘Women's Condolence House’ project, which is a first in Muş. We will establish a women's clubhouse where women can rest and stay. We will soon implement women's solidarity houses that women can use as counselling and solidarity centres. We aim to reach more women by establishing a ‘Women and Family Services Directorate’ in the municipality. We will take a progressive approach in solving the problems faced by women.”
