"Coffee JIN", a Mardin municipal project to promote women’s participation in public life

A café run by women has opened in the province of Mardin, which is governed by the DEM party. "Coffee JIN" is a municipal project to promote women’s participation in public life.

The municipal administration of the province of Mardin (Mêrdîn) has opened a café run by women in the district capital of Artuklu. "Coffee JIN" is a municipal project to promote women’s participation in public life.

Devrim Demir, co-mayor of Mardin, said at the opening that the project had several goals: "Coffee JIN is a place where only women work. In developing a municipal model that is oriented towards social needs, it is important to us to increase the employment of women, make their work visible and support their participation in social life."

In addition, the café gives the population and guests in Mardin access to high-quality and affordable coffee in a warm atmosphere in the historic district of Artuklu. "We want to offer services that match the budget of the citizens," said mayor Demir.

The opening was attended by DEM MPs Saliha Aydeniz and Beritan Güneş Altın and the co-mayor of Artuklu, Münevver Ölker, among others. The opening program ended with a small concert by a group from MA Music.

Mardin has been governed by co-mayors Devrim Demir and Ahmet Türk (DEM) since March 2024. The province has been under state administration almost continuously since 2016, and all measures for gender equality were stopped during this time. Only after the local elections on 31 March was work to promote women and equal coexistence able to be resumed in DEM-governed cities and municipalities in North Kurdistan.
