Erdoğan: Turkey cannot move forward with this constitution

Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan pointed out that it is impossible to “unite society” and “move forward” with the constitution written by coup plotters, and said that a “civil constitution” is needed.

Responding to questions from journalists on the plane returning from his visit to Hungary, Erdoğan referred to the PKK's decision to disband and disarm, saying, “As it frees itself from the rule of arms, the DEM Party will have the opportunity to continue its political struggle in a very different way.”

Erdoğan added, “They have more than 50 deputies in the Parliament. Being able to pursue politics in a much stronger manner will provide new advantages to DEM. It will be beneficial both for DEM's own base and for our country if DEM makes its difference felt in the new period.”

Regarding calls for a new constitution, Erdoğan said the following: “Turkey is changing, the world is changing. We are living in a new era and moving toward an even newer era.”

“Haven't we seen over the past 40 years how difficult it is to unite society with a constitution written by coup plotters?” Erdoğan asked, adding: "Turkey cannot move forward with a constitution written and imposed by coup plotters. We now need a constitution drafted by civilians, not coup plotters. As the AK Party, we are working on this. We have also assigned tasks to some of our colleagues. The real question is whether the Republican People's Party (CHP) will join us on this journey to draft a joint civilian constitution. That is what matters. We say, let us join hands. Let us establish our commissions and, together with these commissions, swiftly draft a civilian constitution and present it to our nation."

Erdoğan remarked that there was no problem with the first four articles, adding, “We will only determine the road map. We can quickly form our delegations. We did this during my term as prime minister, and we can do it again. It won't take much time. We want the new constitution not for ourselves, but for our country. I have no desire to be re-elected or run for office again.”
