The first Kurdish Women's Conference is taking place in North-East Syria under the slogan “Kurdish National Unity Is Realized under the Leadership of Kurdish Women”.
The conference is taking place at Azadi Park in Qamishlo with the participation of about 300 delegates, bringing together representatives of political parties, intellectuals, authors, artists, journalists, and women from various organizations and movements. Siham Dawud said, “Kurds need to leave their mark on the current process in order to prevent genocidal policies. In the 2025 Newroz, the Kurds' desire for unity came to the fore.”
Ilham Ehmed, Co-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, stated that Kurdish women are writing a new history for Rojava.

Ilham Ehmed said, “The fate of the Kurdish people is being written at this sensitive time. It is very important for women to define their role in the current process. The process Syria is going through is a process of construction.”
“Today, at this historic moment, we want all women to take the right stance,” said Ilham Ehmed and continued: “Kurdish unity is very important. This process has reached a certain point, and we hope to organize a conference soon. The unity of the Kurdish people is very important for a decentralized Syria. Leader Abdullah Öcalan's call has also had a positive impact and it is very important to participate in this process. Therefore, this conference will leave its mark on the new history of Syria.”
Newroz Ehmed, General Commander of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), said, “The Kurdish question can only be resolved by addressing the women's issue. Systems that do not take this step cannot solve their own problems. For this reason, an article on self-defense should be added to the draft constitution.”

Newroz Ehmed emphasized the importance of strengthening the YPJ and said, “Through self-defense, the philosophy of ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom) has been acknowledged as a symbol of resistance.”
In the second session of the conference, Rihan Temo, Spokesperson of the Democratic Relations and Alliances Committee of Kongra Star, read out the document “National Unity Conference of Kurdish Women of Rojavayê (Western) Kurdistan”, which sets out the general principles of the conference.

The session was moderated by Narîn Metîni, President of the Kurdistan Future Movement and Kongra Star Spokesperson. Delegates discussed the document after it was read.
Rojin Musa, representative of the Syrian Kurdish Left Party, said: “There should be no discussion about the existence of YPJ, which secures the existence of women.”
Lawyer Suad Xelo said that women's unity should be established throughout Kurdistan and the example of Kurdish women should be spread throughout Syria.

Suad Mistefa, mother of Martyr Hevrin Xelef, said that the points in the document must definitively be implemented. Recalling the draft constitution signed by the Damascus government, Suad Mistefa said that women cannot be deceived by this constitution and that the slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” will always win.
Aydin Anahita Sino said that special emphasis should also be placed on young people.
Journalist Evin Yusif emphasized that committees on law, education, etc. should be established in order to implement the articles in the document.
Kongra Star Coordination Member Şêraz Hemo said that considerable steps have been taken by women in Rojavayê Kurdistan so far. She added that the cultures lost in the occupied geographies should be secured against the assimilation of identity and culture.
After the discussions, the closing speech of the First Kurdish Women's Conference in Rojava was delivered by Stêra Qasim, a member of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party.
Drawing attention to the messages from the Newroz celebrations in 20215, Stêra Qasim said: “This year's Newroz was different. The Kurdish people's holiday was also celebrated by many other peoples. The work of the components and women never fails. After the fall of the Assad regime, the trust between them and the peoples in other parts of Syria is growing. The conference was an obligation. Every woman expressed her opinion. The Kurdish people are one. The Kurdish political movement must unite. We Kurdish women are ready for a national congress.”
The National Kurdish Women's Conference will end with the announcement of the final declaration.
