Internationalists from the Andrea Wolf Institute of the Jineolojî Academy in Rojava, issued a written statement to call for a "powerful internationalist mobilisation to defend the Rojava revolution and a free, self-determined future for all peoples in Syria and the Middle East."
The statement underlined that "Since 27 November 2024, jihadist groups have launched huge military campaigns in Syria with the declared aim of overthrowing the Assad dictatorship and establishing an Islamic state model. But at the same time, these jihadist proxy groups have intensified their attacks against the Kurdish people and all communities in the regions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration North and East Syria (DAANES) with the guidance and direct involvement of Turkish army forces. This is a new chapter added to genocidal politics. Feminicides and occupation wars have been imposed on the peoples of Kurdistan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria as a part of Western hegemony policies to establish a Greater Middle East project according to capitalist interests."
The statement added: "Against this, the resistance in Rojava is a struggle for women’s liberation, to defend women’s lives from rape, violence, feminicide; to protect the future of children, their dreams and joy. It is a struggle for the defence of ecology and the land; to prevent the olive trees in Afrin from being uprooted by the occupiers, and to save the rivers of the entire region that have been suffocated by Turkish dam projects. It is a resistance against all dictatorial and violent regimes, and a struggle for self-determination and democratic autonomy of the people in the Middle East.
What happens now in Syria reminds us of the capturing of the revolution in Iran 1979, by the mullahs, or the return of the fascist Taliban regime in Afghanistan. We witness the same mentality and crimes against humanity that were carried out by IS mercenaries 10 years before in Kobane, Raqqa or Shengal. The groups attacking the Autonomous Administration are not rebels, they are jihadist gangs, led by the Turkish state, that are trying to establish a caliphate based on Sharia laws. They have taken women as hostages, with the intention of selling them, raping or killing them. Others have been forced to leave their homes with their families. 200,000 people were displaced for the second time during the last six years after the occupation of Afrin. It is once again, a war in which women have to pay the highest price, as well as the Kurdish people, people of the Christian, Alevit, Durzi, and Ezidi communities who are massacred wherever the jihadist gangs pass."
The statement continued: "As we have done in the past, we continue today, to defend Rojava with the united strength of women. On every frontline, in every town and village of Rojava, women are a part of the active resistance. Women are preparing food, organising shelters and medication for those who have been displaced. Women work tirelessly on publishing updates on the current situation; they are taking up arms to fight in the ranks of Women’s Self-Defence Forces, YPJ and SDF against the attacks of jihadist groups and the Turkish army.
From Rojava, we call our friends and freedom-loving people from all over the world to realize and unmask the reality of the new rulers in Syria. Even if they wear cravats and gloves they still have blood on their hands. Now everyone is needed. The time to act, to defend the Rojava Revolution, and to spread the women’s revolution is just now.
We deeply believe that with the common spirit and commitment of the Kobane resistance, with a powerful international mobilisation we can turn this dangerous situation into a new opportunity for genuine democracy, women’s freedom, peace and justice in Syria and the whole Middle East.
Our solidarity and common struggle is our strongest weapon!"
