Kongra Star announces two weeks of actions to fight "violence against women"

Kongra Star Coordination declared 23 June "Day to fight political killings against women". In this context, a series of action will be carried out.

Kongra Star Coordination made a statement on the anniversary of the massacre that took place on 23 June 2020 in the village of Helince in Kobanê. In the drone attack carried out by the Turkish state on a village’s house, 3 women fell martyrs, Zehra Berkel, Hebûn Mela Xelîl.

In a written statement, Kongra Star said that they declared June 23 as the "Day of combating political murders against women" and that they will carry out a series of actions on this occasion.

While commemorating Sema Yüce, a PKK member who was martyred on 17 June 1998, Kongra Star also saluted the hunger strike resistance carried out against isolation in prisons.

Sema Yüce set her body on fire during the Newroz’ 1998. “I want to be the bridge with my body from the 8 March to 21 March”, she said. Born in a village in Ağrı in 1969, Sema Yüce studied sociology at Middle East Technical University. Yüce was highly engaged in the freedom struggle during her college studies. In April 1991, Sema Yüce become an active freedom fighter. In one of her speeches she said: “The freedom doctrine formulated and inspired by the leader Abdullah Öcalan has become a source of strength for me. When I evaluate myself, I see that all conflicts between Kurdish society and Kurdish sovereign classes have reached the maximum level that they could reach. This is a level that goes beyond myself”.

Kongra Star said: “We will organise a series of events between 17 and 30 June. The messages of Sema Yüce and Zeynep Kınacı will be read. Seminars will be held. Movies will be shown. Actions in various cities will be held. A festival will be organised. There will be a photography exhibition. Violence against women will be discussed. Again, the invasion attacks against South Kurdistan will be exposed. Ceremonies will be held in Kobanê, Shehba and Derik on 23 June to commemorate the martyrs of Helinc. We call on all women to participate in these programmes. We must stand against all political femicide and protect the women's revolution.”
