Kurdish women visit the Vatican for freedom for Abdullah Öcalan

Kurdish women visited the Vatican as part of the international campaign "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, a political solution to the Kurdish question".

A group of women led by the Kurdish Women's Movement in Switzerland (YJK-S) visited the Vatican as part of the "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, a political solution to the Kurdish question" campaign, which was launched by the friends of the Kurdish people in 80 centres of the world on 10 October 2023 for the physical freedom of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and gradually spread all over the world.

The centre of attention was the national costumes of 47 Kurdish women who participated in the Easter ceremony held in St Peter's Square at the Vatican and attended by Pope Francis.


After the event, a dossier prepared by Kurdish women was handed over to the secretariat to be given to Pope Francis.

During the ceremony held in St Peter's Square, slogans such as "Jin Jiyan Azadî" (Woman Life Freedom), "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, status for Kurdistan" were chanted. Kurdish women gave information about the isolation and the ongoing attacks in Kurdistan.

After the ceremony, a meeting was held with the Pope's secretaries. During the meeting, a dossier on the life of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and 3 separate dossiers on Öcalan’s isolation and the war in Kurdistan were presented. The Vatican secretariat official stated that they were informed about the experiences of the Kurdish people and that the files on this subject would be given to the Pope. Kurdish women also negotiated for a meeting with the Pope at a later date.
