Lawyers hold Justice Vigil for Deniz Poyraz

The sixth hearing in the case of the murder of Deniz Poyraz will be held today. Lawyers took over Justice Vigil for the killed HDP worker.

Bar associations and lawyers took over the Justice Vigil action, which was launched for journalists arrested in the Cumhuriyet Newspaper trial in 2017 with the slogan "Freedom to Defend, Justice for All".

This month the vigil in Izmir was for Deniz Poyraz, who was murdered in the city’s Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) provincial building. The Justice Vigil, held at the Izmir Courthouse in Bayraklı, was attended by the Vice President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations Gürkan Altun, many bar association presidents, lawyers and human rights defenders, as well as Deniz Poyaz's family. HDP MPs Züleyha Gülüm, Pero Dündar, Murat Çepni and Serpil Kemalbay also attended.

The sixth hearing of the case where Onur Gencer is standing trial will be held today. Gencer carried out an armed attack on the building of the HDP on 17 June 2021, and killed the party worker Deniz Poyraz.

In the fifth hearing of the case, after the tension, the court board ruled that the case should be heard at the Şakran Prison campus in İzmir's Aliağa district, for "security reasons."

The court may pronounce a sentence today, thus closing the case.

Speaking on behalf of Deniz Poyraz’s family lawyers, ÖHD lawyer Özcan Sarıoğlu said: "We can say that the judiciary is making a great effort to implement the policy of impunity in this case, as in many others."

The lawyer said that they want real justice in the Deniz Poyraz Case, and added: "We insist on the need for a fair and democratic trial. We want real justice."
