The Viyan Women's Council in Cologne has sent letters to UN Secretary General António Guterres as part of the freedom for Abdullah Öcalan campaign. The campaign was launched in South Africa in January to get the United Nations to act for a just peace in Turkey. The aim is to prompt action by the UN with a coordinated international solidarity campaign.
Until 8 March, Viyan Women's Council had collected signatures for the “100 reasons to prosecute the dictator” campaign launched by the Kurdish women's movement. As a spokeswoman for the Women's Council announced in front of the post office on Wiener Platz, the Cologne activists have achieved the goal they have set themselves and are now collecting signatures for the letter campaign to the UN. So far, hundreds of signatures have been collected demanding freedom for Abdullah Öcalan.
