A young artist becomes the voice of her people through her music

Axîn Reşo uses her clear and youthful voice to reflect the pain and strength of the people of Afrin.

The young voice of Kurdish music, Axîn Reşo, stands out not only for her talent but also for the deep love she holds for her homeland, despite being only twenty years old. As ANHA News Agency writes, she transforms her life, woven with displacement, resistance, and longing, into a powerful expression of her people’s voice through her art. Her songs are more than melodies; they carry the sorrow of occupied lands, the struggle of a silenced identity, and the ache of unending yearning.

Axîn Reşo was born in the village of Bililko, in the Rajo (Raco) district of Afrin (Efrîn), and spent her childhood in Quto, her mother’s village. She was just seven years old when her passion for music and natural talent began to draw the attention of those around her. Her mother, in particular, supported her desire to sing and encouraged her to attend a local music education center.

Axîn’s gift for singing was first noticed by her mother when, at just seven years old, she would sing at home and on her way to school. With her mother’s encouragement, she took her first steps toward professional music training. Winning first place in a competition organized by her school gave her confidence and marked a turning point in her artistic journey.

However, on 20 January 2018, the Turkish state and its allied militias launched an offensive against Afrin. After 58 days of resistance, the region was occupied, and Axîn’s family was forced to flee to Shahba (Şehba). This displacement gave a deeper meaning to her songs. Her melodies, which express longing for her homeland, became a voice for the emotions of those who were also displaced from Afrin.

In 2019, her family decided to relocate to Aleppo. As living conditions became increasingly difficult, Axîn began working alongside her father at a young age to help support the household. She worked at a tailor’s shop to contribute to the family’s income. Although this period created some distance between her and her music, the passion growing inside her eventually brought her back to the stage.

The opening of the Hilala Zerîn Cultural Movement center in Aleppo on 26 January 2022 marked a new beginning for Axîn. As one of the center’s first members, she found the opportunity to express herself freely. Through her work with the Martyr Vejîn Music Group, Axîn made her voice heard and connected with her people by performing at cultural events such as Newroz, International Women’s Day on March 8, and many others.

Her growing artistic skill gave her the chance to teach music to dozens of students at the center in the Sheikh Maqsoud (Şêxmeqsûd) neighborhood of Aleppo. Sharing her musical knowledge with younger talents, she also began appearing in music videos, strengthening her professional career. Not stopping there, the young artist stepped onto the theater stage as well, where she now both studies and gains performance experience.

Axîn Reşo began her artistic journey with the song “Emê Biçin Heval” (“We Will Go, Comrade”) and continues to enrich her repertoire with folk songs, revolutionary anthems, and national ballads. Through her music, she reflects the truth of her people and a silenced identity, carrying forward the voice of resistance.

Axîn states that she draws inspiration from prominent figures in Kurdish music such as Ayşe Şan, Alî Tico, Cemîl Horo, Bêyto Can, and Bavê Selah.

Through ANHA, Axîn delivers a heartfelt message to all artists: “Let them keep Kurdish culture alive through their art and protect it from disappearance, whether through their voices, instruments, or traditional dances. Let them continue to sustain our identity.”
