Martyr Yekta Herekol Theater Festival kicks off today in Qamishlo

The Martyr Yekta Herekol Theater Festival could not be held for several years due to the threats and attacks carried out by the invading Turkish state against Northern and Eastern Syria, as well as the Corona virus pandemic.

The Martyr Yekta Herekol Theater Festival will kick off today at the Mihemed Şexo Culture and Art Center in Qamishlo.

Since its first edition (in 2015) the festival has undergone various transformations. The first 3 editions (in 2015, 2016, 2017), the plays prepared in Kurdish only coming from the Cizre region. After the liberation of other territories in Northern and Eastern Syria from ISIS mercenaries, the plays participating in the festival were also performed in Kurdish and Arabic, and theater groups from other regions attended.

Due to the attacks carried out by the Turkish state against the Afrin canton (2018), the Martyr Yekta Herekol Theater Festival was not held that year, while the 4th festival was held the following year (in 2019).

Due to the spread of the corona virus, no festivals are organized, like in the rest of the world, in 2020.

The 5th Martyr Yekta Herekol Theater Festival was held in 2021, but again it could not be held in 2022 due to the Turkish state's threats to invade Northern and Eastern Syria.

The 6th festival will start today, Monday, at the Mihemed Shexo Culture and Art Center in Qamishlo.
