Reading group dedicated to Democratic Confederalism

The Emergency Committee for Rojava will dedicate the reading group of the month of April to Democratic Confederalism as a system of governance.

The Emergency Committee for Rojava will explore Democratic Confederalism as a system of governance via Ocalan’s Sociology of Freedom and Bookchin’s The Communalist Project and The Meaning of Confederalism, in its reading group in April.

The reading group will meet on Saturday, 1 April at 2pm EST for  its fifth session of the series focused on Democratic Confederalism.

Anyone interested can register here

This series covers the theories and history of democratic confederalism as practiced by the Kurdish Freedom Movement. The sessions started with an introduction of the historical context and overview, and then moved to Öcalan’s theories of history and democratic civilization.

After reading about state and class-based societies and capitalist modernity, the group is now diving into democratic confederalism, followed by social ecology, as alternatives. The series will end with a discussion of women’s liberation and eco-feminism and how these concepts and practices relate to democratic confederalism.
