At the guerrillas' tailoring...

HPG guerrilla Şervan Mêrdîn is at the guerrillas' tailoring. For him the life of the guerrilla is all the same, no matter whether you are on the front or in a unit that completes the front.

The guerrillas are developing new methods to ensure the provision of their own needs, as their area and ranks continue growing. The tailoring of the guerrilla is one of them. Here they strive to prepare the right and proper outfits, that cover all their requirements, using solid and fast techniques. To be at the right time at the right designated place. People's Defense Forces (HPG) member Şervan Mêrdîn is one of those guerrillas who is putting great efforts in the tailoring. Şervan who joined the guerrilla in 2015 underlined that as a guerrilla, his practical work in the tailoring was not to be undervalued.

Why were you assigned to the tailoring?

I was a tailor before I joined the PKK ranks. So I came here to the tailoring as it was my job before. I am doing this work here for two years now. Of course, it is different from my previous work, but I got accustomed to the materials here very fast.

What kind of things do you do as a tailor?

We plan everything according to the comrades’ needs. We make the case so that the guns do not rust. We are tailoring bags according to the comrades' requests. We are also sewing covers for stuff that are quickly breakable ones.

Can't you get all this also from outside?

That might be, but those purchased products are very expensive and of poor quality. Some of the goods we buy tear very quickly. We are repairing the old belts as well. We sew magazine covers, grenade covers and covers for devices. They have a much longer durability and fit the needs of the comrades perfectly. We see that we are doing much effort here and that this effort is not wasted.

Are you receiving suggestions or criticism about your work?

Indeed. When there are some deficiencies the comrades are pointing them out and we are acting accordingly. No matter what kind of criticism comes in, we try to work on those points to not repeat those mistakes. When there is a criticism I try to convey those to my comrades, and at times I lack time for certain work, which the comrades approach with understanding. I dwell on all the criticism voiced. Most of the reviews I get are positive. Sometimes the comrades are making suggestions. We are working on all of them.

How are you doing your planning?

We direct our planning to the needs of the comrades. For example, if the comrades have a demand in bags or gun cases, we are preparing those accordingly. Sometimes when there is too much work to be done, the comrades come and give a helping hand. There are also difficulties in this work, but the affection, meaningfulness and labor that comes with it are doing more than justice.

Is this work sometimes annoying you? Your comrades are fighting on the front, does this not bother you?

Since I know what I am working here for, I do not get distressed. Our comrades are fighting on the front, and here we cover the requirements of our comrades. This creates a unity among us. First of all, we are guerrillas. The comrades are fighting on the fronts, and also we here are a part of the fight, and we complete each other. There is a collective life and effort. The work I do is for the revolution. I am very strict in my work as my comrades deserve the best of all.

Are there troubles concerning the security, do the increasing Turkish airstrikes cause you issues?

Maybe I repeat myself, but first of all, we are guerrillas. Because we are cautious in terms of security there are no troubles. The enemy is also attacking psychologically. Our job is to frustrate all of those attacks. No matter how many and intense airstrikes they carry out, we are not troubled because we are always acting according to our guerrilla principles.
