Around two thousand people have been detained in recent days in connection with the protests that started after the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. In parallel with the crackdown on citizens, detentions and attacks against journalists also continue.
Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) announced the one-day balance sheet of the attacks on press freedom. Pointing out that attacks on freedom of the press, freedom of thought and expression have increased, DFG said, “No power can veil the truth, journalism cannot be put on trial.”
The one-day balance sheet shared by DFG is as follows:
* Three journalists were taken into custody.
* A correspondent for the BBC was deported for covering the Saraçhane protests.
* Journalist Nuray Mert was sued over a photograph she took in 2024 and was banned from traveling abroad.
* RTÜK imposed 7 separate fines on 4 channels.
* Three journalists were banned from traveling abroad.
* Sözcü TV will be blacked out for 10 days.
* Journalists were denied access to university campuses.
