Journalist Öznur Değer, who was tortured and detained during a raid on her home before being imprisoned, remains in prison following the first hearing held on Thursday.
JinNews correspondent Öznur Değer was remanded in custody following a raid on her home in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin on 6 February. The journalist was subjected to torture during the detention. After appearing in court, she was sent to prison on 7 February on the grounds of her social media posts.
The journalist's lawyers, Ali Kahraman and Erdal Kuzu, attended the hearing held at Mardin 2nd Criminal Judgeship of Peace today to review the detention of the Kurdish journalist.
Lawyer Ali Kahraman stated that the criminalized digital media posts were news content.
Stating that posts from 2022 cannot legally be used as a reason for an arrest in 2025, the lawyer said, “She is a well-known and followed person throughout Turkey. When released, she will only do her job as a journalist.”
While lawyer Ali Karaman asked for the release of his client, the court ruled for continued detention for the Kurdish journalist.
This is not the first time that Öznur Değer has been targeted by the Turkish police and judiciary. She has already been arrested and imprisoned several times and is currently facing multiple charges. The most recent investigation against Değer began in December when she was accused of insulting an official in Mardin. She called a Turkish police officer a fascist after he made sexist comments and she described his comments as obscene. In a court case in Ankara, the JinNews reporter was convicted last July of alleged PKK support.
