An investigation was initiated against JINNEWS correspondent Öznur Değer who was subjected to sexist remarks by a police officer in Mardin.
The reason for the action against Değer is her reaction to sexist remarks made by a Turkish police officer. The case occurred on Sunday in the district of Midyat, which is located in the east of Mardin. Değer was accompanying a condolence visit by activists from the Free Women's Movement (TJA) to the family of journalist Cihan Bilgin, who was killed along with her colleague Nazım Daştan in a Turkish drone attack in northern Syria last week, when a police officer made offensive and intimidating verbal sexual harassment.
Değer immediately countered and put the policeman in his place, also calling him an ‘obscene fascist’. The incident was also caught on camera, and the journalist posted a video on X. Değer's response to the harassment is now being interpreted as an insult, and a charge may soon be filed. The sexist police officer, on the other hand, need not fear any consequences, said the Association of Women Journalists of Mesopotamia (MKG), of which Değer is also a member. “By not objecting to such behaviour, the system is sending the signal that police officers are allowed to express themselves in a sexist manner without any consequences, while victims, on the other hand, are punished. We do not accept this system.”
