647 sick prisoners in Turkey awaiting treatment

The Human Rights Association (IHD) in Turkey has submitted a report to the Ministry of Justice regarding the situation of sick prisoners in Turkey.

The Human Rights Association (IHD) in Turkey has submitted a report to the Ministry of Justice regarding the situation of sick prisoners in Turkey. According to the figures of the IHD, 647 sick prisoners are in need of treatment, while 247 of them are in a severe condition. 70 of the sick prisoners are jailed in the western Aegean region in Turkey.

Despite Turkey having abolished the death penalty, the policies imposed on the sick prisoners work as a death penalty as the state allows sick prisoners to die by denying them treatment. While rights violations continue to increase in the prisons in North Kurdistan and Turkey, the government and the Ministry of Justice remain silent about the worsening conditions of the sick prisoners. The isolation of these prisoners and lack of treatment pushes them towards death. The report of the IHD submitted to the Ministry of Justice on 24 January says there are 247 severely ill prisoners in need of urgent treatment, while a total of 647 prisoners are suffering from illnesses waiting to be treated.

In the first three months of the year, 6 sick prisoners lost their lives in prison as they were unable to receive treatment. In the meantime, 198 more sick prisoners have been added to the figures of the IHD report in January. 70 of these sick prisoners are in prisons in the Aegean region, while 16 of them have medical reports that say that they cannot be kept in prison. The situation of the sick prisoners in the Aegean region is worsening each day due to lack of treatment and the repression of the prison administrations that are violating their basic rights.
