The four-day hunger strike organised by the “Seyfo Committee”, under which the Syriac community is organised in order to draw attention to the 100th anniversary of the Seyfo genocide, is continuing in the Midyat district of Mardin. The strikers have today been visited by the HDP Mardin MP candidates.
The HDP candidates for Mardin, Gülser Yıldırım, Prof. Dr. Mithat Sancar, Erol Dora, Mehmet Ali Aslan, Enise Güneyli and the executives of HDP-DBP have visited the Syriac people who are on hunger strike demanding the recognition of Seyfo. The strikers welcomed the HDP members to the Syriac Associations Federation (SÜDEF) building, where they are holding the strike.
SÜDEF chair Evgil Türker said they are happy to receive the support of various NGOs, organisations, people and lastly the HDP candidates during the 3 days of the hunger strike.
HDP Mardin branch co-chair Musa Alkan stressed the multicultural life in Mesopotamia and strongly condemned the genocide committed against the Syriac people, while HDP Mardin MP candidate Mithat Sancar said what non-Muslim communities had undergone in 1915 must be called a genocide.
Another HDP candidate, Gülser Yıldırım, said that fraternity among peoples is possible through an accord based on equality and a free life, but not through the empty words of governments.
Following the speeches, DBP Midyat branch co-chair Nilgün Toprak, HDP district executive Kadri Çelik, HDP counsellor Cemal Bektaş and former Gercus mayor Esta Üner joined the Syriac people on hunger strike.
