Hura Nîkbext goes on hunger strike in Evin Prison to protest death penalty

Hura Nîkbext is held in Tehran’s Evin Prison. She went on hunger strike to protest the death penalty.

Hura Nîkbext, who is imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison by the Iranian regime, went on hunger strike to protest the silence surrounding death sentences.

In her statement, Nîkbext said that she would continue her hunger strike unless a clear and firm stance is taken against the death sentences.

According to United Nations data, the Iranian regime executed a thousand Kurdish and Iranian detainees over the past year. While there has been a rise in executions in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan, it is noted that the death sentences of Warisha Muradi, Pakhshan Azizi, and Sharifa Mohammadi could be carried out at any moment.

The NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR) announced on April 7 that the number of executions in Iran more than doubled in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

According to figures compiled by the Norway-based IHR, at least 230 people, including eight women, were executed between the beginning of January and the end of March. In the first three months of 2024, 110 executions have been recorded.
