Kurdish prisoner transferred to solitary confinement in Orumiyeh

A Kurdish prisoner, who had referred to the prison health centre was beaten up by a number of agents and prisoners, after an argument with the authorities before being transferred to solitary confinement in the central prison in Orumiyeh.

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, on Wednesday night,9 August, a Kurdish prisoner known as Ali Mohammadi who was detained in solitary confinement of Ward 12 at Orumiyeh Central Prison for 15 months referred to the prison health centre complaining with multiple mental problems. However, the doctor refused to visit him and an argument happened between the prisoner and the health centre authorities. The prisoner, whose intolerance of his punishment has been confirmed by Forensic Medicine Organisation, was beaten up by health centre authorities and several detainees before being transferred to solitary confinement cells.

“When being transferred to solitary confinement cell, the prisoner told his cellmates that he would go on hunger strike. But no information has been received on his condition due to banning his family from either visiting or talking to him on the phone.”, an informed source told Kurdistan Human Rights Network.

Ali Mohammadi Moghaddam, a Kurdish citizen of Kermanshah and resident of Tehran, holds a master’s degree in political science and he was employed by the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was arrested by the Intelligence Ministry agents in his house in 2007 and
then transferred to the solitary confinement at the Tehran Intelligence Detention Centre for interrogations before being transferred to Evin Prison 15 months later.

After nearly two years of waiting, his trial was held at Branch 2 of Tehran’s Military Court in early 2010. Despite the defence statements made by this political prison, he was sentenced to death on charges of Moharebeh (waging war against God) only on the basis of charges brought forward by the intelligence ministry. Moreover, the appeal of this Kurdish prisoner was refused and the verdict was approved by the Supreme Court.

In 2010, the Commission on Amnesty and Pardons agreed to his amnesty and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment and exile to Orumiyeh Prison.

The detainee faces severe mental illness due to his 15-month stays in solitary confinement cells and the Forensic Medicine Organisation has even confirmed his inability to withstand a prison sentence. He was transferred from Evin Prison to the Central Prison of Orumiyeh in late 2010 and has been on hunger strike for several times for not paying attention to his medical treatment.
