The Federation of Solidarity Associations with Families' Prisoners (MED TUHAD-FED) is launching a petition alarmed by the coronavirus (Kovid-19) epidemic which has reached a dangerous stage in prisons.
The campaign, which includes 39 institutions, political parties, civil society and labor organizations, aims to collect one million signatures.
MED TUHAD-FED co-chair Mehmet Temizyüz reminded that the coronavirus epidemic is affecting everyone without discriminating between race and gender.
He emphasized that equal rights should be granted to all prisoners. Noting that the virus is spreading despite taking precautions outside, Temizyüz said: "Will the government be able to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection in prisons under these conditions?"
Temizyüz said that concern is increasing for the situation in prisons, and added that MED TUHAD-FED met with civil society organizations, political parties and labor organizations to underline the need for the equal treatment of prisoners.
Temizyüz said that they decided to launch the petition campaign in line with the demands of the families.
"The content of the campaign is to demand equal treatement. We aim to collect a million signatures. After completing the format of the campaign, we will announce to the public."
