Plight of disappeared people to be taken to Ankara by Saturday Mothers

The Saturday Mothers yesterday held their 272nd sit-in in front of Galatasaray High School in Istanbul. The protest ended and the mothers, who are looking for disappeared sons and husbands for many years, started their journey to Ankara. They are going to the capital one more time to draw attention to the huge tragedy of disappeared people.

The last meeting was dedicated to Aydin Tekay, a father of two who disappeared in 1996, and Tolga Baykal Ceylan who disappeared in 2004.

Ayse Demirbilek told the story of Aydin Tekay; “He was taken into custody by soldiers in Diber Village in Dicle district of Diyarbakir. He had two children. His children and wife have been waiting for 16 years to hear news from him. Gendarmerie detained him. Since then no one saw him or heard anything about him. Don’t we owe Aydin Tekay’s wife, children and mother who had to live without their loved one, some explanation as a society?” asked Demirbilek.

Kadriye Baykal mother of Tolga Baykal Ceylan who disappeared in 2004 in Igneliada said: “We want justice not revenge. The State must listen to us. The authorities have to face up to this tragic reality. There are 17 thousands disappeared people in this country. We are going to make us visible to the government. We will be on their neck, until they take up their responsibility and start looking for killers and punish them."
