Political prisoners in the L-type prison in Patnos have gone on a hunger strike. The reason for this is a serious assault by security personnel on Bilal Babahan, Vedat Kalın and Ferit Kaşçı. Family members reported a few days ago that the detainees were handcuffed and then beaten by dozens of members of the guards. Two of the prisoners suffered broken arms and bruised heads.
According to the lawyers' association ÖHD (Lawyers for Freedom), the prisoners had refused the procedure of a military counting. "Due to the increasing violations of rights in jail, the prisoners have gone on a hunger strike. The protest is carried out alternately for five days," said the ÖHD branch in Van on Twitter. The organisation wants to investigate the incident and announce a detailed report on the rights violations in Patnos.
Bilal Babahan and Vedat Kalın took part in the 2019 death fast for the ending of Abdullah Öcalan's isolation and other resistance actions in prison.
