Prisoners in Kalkandere complain of symptoms of coronavirus

Umut Savaş Koçyiğit, who is held in Rize Kalkandere L Type Closed Prison, said that there were signs of coronavirus in 26 prisoners but nothing was done in the infirmary.

Umut Savaş Koçyiğit, who is held in Rize Kalkandere L Type Closed Prison, talked about the rights violations they have been subjected to during his weekly phone talk with his father Ali Koçyiğit. Koçyiğit said that although they have symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19), they are not treated.

"We do not know whether we have a flu or the virus," said Koçyiğit, adding that they are 26 people in a ward and all have symptoms of the virus.

Koçyiğit said, "Last week, two of our friends had influenza and they are still complaining of sore throat. I have been sick for 3 days, some of our friends are sick for 4, 5 and even 7 days. We have sent our friend, who has been sick for 7 days, to the infirmary. They said he has a cold. They did nothing. They did not take care of us here. Every day, 4 to 5 guards enter our ward for counting purposes."

Underlining that his son and the other detainees are concerned about their lives, Ali Koçyiğit said: "there is a lot of negligence in prison. They officially leave political prisoners to die."
