The hunger strike of political prisoners started on 27 November 2020. Prisoners are demanding the end of the isolation of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and an end to the violations of rights. The hunger strike continues indefinitely with a new group taking over the protest every five days. The hunger strike has reached day 221.

Prisoners on hunger strike in Mardin E Type Closed Prison said in the message they sent that their demands were legitimate and that they would continue their actions with determination.

The message from the prisoners said: “The coronavirus pandemic has spread in Mardin E Type Closed Prison, and our friends have been affected by this virus. We are determined to continue the hunger strike we undertook in Mardin Prison, as in all prisons, against the absolute isolation of our Leader. Our request is very clear. It is a legitimate request. The isolation of our Leader, Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, must be lifted as soon as possible, and his legal rights must be granted as a whole. Until we break the isolation imposed on our Leader, we won’t step out of the line of resistance we follow and we will not take any step back. We will definitely continue the legacy of struggle left to us. The patriotic Kurdish people will fight to end this isolation and will be the voice of the prisoners. On this basis, we convey our most revolutionary greetings to all our patriotic people.”
