Saturday Mothers hold new sit in
Saturday Mothers gathered once again in Istanbul, Diyarbakýr, Þýrnak and Mardin on Saturday to demand the trial of those responsible of unsolved murders and extrajudicial killings.
The Saturday Mothers sat for justice for the 362nd time in Istanbul holding photos of the disappeared and red carnations, symbol of their silent scream. This weekend sit-in was dedicated to Abdülkerim Yurtseven (73), Mikdat Özeken (18) and Münür Sarýtaþ (13) who disappeared after being taken into custody by soldiers under the command of Major Mehmet Emin Yurdakul on October 27, 1995.
The 160th sit-in in the Koþuyolu Park in Diyarbakýr was dedicated to Salih Çalýk and Sinan Fidan. Çalýk was injured during a military operation and later taken into custody on June 6, 1994 along with Sinan Fidan and Süleyman Muntaþ. Muntaþ was released 25 days later but Çalýk and Fidan was never heard of again. The prosecutor of the Diyarbakýr State Security Court of the time told the disappeared’s families that they were not taken into custody.
The sit-in in the Cizre Town of Þýrnak, to which Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Cizre Chair Nimet Aþut and other BDP executives also attended, was dedicated to Abdulkerim Kalkan who disappeared in 1993 after being taken into custody. Kalkan’s widow Zekiye Kalkan said, “The Cizre Gendarmerie Commander of the time Cemal Temizöz confiscated the IDs of all men in the village. Fifteen days after my husband went to the gendarmerie command to ask for his ID and we never heard of him again. We do not even know where his bones are. However, the murderers are well-known. Why are they not being tried?”
Mehmet Emin Narin who was murdered on the street in 1993 was commemorated in the sit-in in the Nusaybin Town of Mardin. “We never learned who killed my husband,” said Narin’s widow Bedia Akýncý, “I want my husband’s murderers to be found and tried.”
