HDP: The AKP uses refugees as a political tool

"The AKP uses refugees as weapons. The AKP will be responsible for any death," said HDP Immigration and Refugees Commission Gülsüm Ağaoğlu.

HDP Immigration and Refugees Commission Gülsüm Ağaoğlu issued a written statement today about the targeting of refugees after the losses suffered by the Turkish state in Idlib.

The statement said: "After the losses suffered in Idlib on the evening of 27 February, the government once again has embraced the refugee trumpet.

The AKP used refugees as bargaining chips and threatened that it would no longer be able to keep its borders protected. It went further, saying it would open the border gates."

Ağaoğlu added: "As a result of this attitude, refugees are being used as a politica tool and they end up in the hands of human traffickers."

Refugees have begun to head towards the borders of Greece and Bulgaria in extremely unhealthy and dangerous conditions both by land and sea.

The HDP executive said that "due to the intensified control measures by Greece and Bulgaria at the borders, most of the Syrian and Afghanistan refugees were imprisoned between the borders, in winter conditions. Some refugees were told to use the sea route even though it is extremely dangerous, using inflatable boats."

Gülsüm Ağaoğlu said that the AKP government is carrying out new crimes against refugees.

"This government - she said - will be responsible for possible deaths and tragedies in this dangerous journey made by refugees."
