Violations and torture reported in prisons in Black Sea region

Van Bar prepared a report of violations of rights in prisons in the Black Sea region. The report also stated that the prisoner named Metin Aktin has been on hunger strike since 13 February.

Van Bar Association Prison Commission announced its report on violations of rights in Ordu P Type, Giresun Espiye L Type, Trabzon, Beşikdüzü T Type, Rize, Kalkandere L Type and Bayburt M Type Closed prisons. Besides the commission members, many lawyers attended the press conference held at the Van Bar Association building.

A prisoner on hunger strike

Speaking at the meeting, Cüneyt Ergün said: "It has been confirmed that a prisoner named Metin Aktin is on hunger strike since 13 February. He is protesting against what he considers to be an arbitrary practice was imposed on him and other newly arrived prisoners as they were put in isolation.”

Among the violations of rights in all prisons, the Van Bar listed the ban imposed on magazines, papers and books; lack or poor medical care; limitation on the time allowed to sport and air; exclusion from library and courses-workshops areas. Prisoners also said that a times 24 people were kept in a 8-people ward; they also complained about the high prices of goods sold in the canteen. 

In addition, prisoners complained about being taken to hospital handcuffed and that sick prisoners were not speedily attended, which led in most cases to a worsening of their conditions.
