107 municipal employees sued for protesting Van co-mayor's arrest

Up to 3 years in jail is sought for 107 workers of Van Municipality who have been sued for protesting the detention of Co-mayor Bekir Kaya in the municipality in November, 2016.

Van Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has completed its investigation against 107 municipal employees who had protested the detention of Mayor Bekir Kaya in the municipal building on 17 November, 2016. Van 7th Criminal Court of First Instance has accepted the indictment.

The 107 municipal employees, who include municipal council members, had just chanted slogans, but still faced a crackdown by riot police and were dispersed by use of force during the operation against the municipality.

In the indictment, prosecutor demands that the 107 employees be sentenced up to 3 years in jail for "participating in illegal meetings and marches without arms and not dispersing despite warnings”.

The trial of the 107 municipal employees is scheduled to begin in the following days.
