13 Turkish soldiers killed in guerrilla actions marking the 15 August initiative

Guerrillas continue their actions to welcome the anniversary of the offensive of 15 August 1984, when the guerrillas fired the first bullet at the Turkish occupation forces and launched the armed liberation struggle.

The Press Office of the People's Defence Forces (HPG) reported continued actions against the Turkish army in the guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq). 

According to the HPG statement on Saturday, 13 soldiers of the Turkish invading forces were killed and six others injured in guerrilla actions in the Zap and Metina regions of the Medya Defence Zones.

HPG gave the following details of the actions and the recent attacks by the Turkish army:

Girê Cûdî

At Girê Cûdî in the Şehîd Delîl section of the western Zap region, guerrillas of the YJA Star (Free Women’s Troops) carried out actions against Turkish troops and positions from 11 August morning until 12 August night. Semi-automatic and heavy weapons were used in the actions which were dedicated to the anniversary of the armed struggle on 15 August 1984. Five soldiers were killed and two soldiers were wounded as a result of the actions, while one position of the Turkish forces was damaged by heavy weapons fire. The guerrillas of YJA Star also intervened against helicopter movements in the area.

Metîna

In the Girê Ortê resistance area in Metîna, guerrillas infiltrated a Turkish unit on 10 August and attacked from close range with firearms, leaving eight soldiers dead and four others injured. Another guerrilla group supported the actions with semi-automatic and heavy weapons. This action was also carried out to welcome the anniversary of the 15 August offensive.

Attacks by the Turkish army

The Turkish army has bombed the Medya Defence Zones eleven times since yesterday. The targets of the Turkish fighter jets were Girê Cûdî, Girê Hekarî in Metîna as well as Gundê Dêreşê and Deşta Kafya in Gare. In addition, HPG reported various artillery attacks on the Zap and Metîna regions as well as twelve strikes by attack helicopters in the Girê Cûdî area on 10 August.
