Co-mayor of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, Fırat Anlı had been jailed on 30 October 2016 in the scope of an investigation by Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Anlı was released from prison, alongside another defendant, Abdullah Bal, following the third hearing in the case at Diyarbakır 8th Heavy Penal Court on 14 July.
Prosecutor of Diyarbakır 8th Heavy Penal Court filed an appeal to the higher Diyarbakır 9th Heavy Penal Court against the release of Anlı and Bal, and demanded their re-arrest, arguing that the court decision for their release was against the law and procedures.
Following an assessment, Diyarbakır 9th Heavy Penal Court ruled to issue an arrest warrant for both Anlı and Bal due to the “presence of concrete evidences that they committed the offences in question”, “classification of offence” and “strong suspicion”.
