Christians in Turkey are concerned by the AKP’s recent discourse and policies that disregard different faiths. The pastor of the Protestant Church in Van and the president of Van Protestant Association Vahit Yıldız spoke to ANF on the concerns of his community.
‘OUR PASTORS WERE ARRESTED’
Yıldız stated that the Christians in Van are concerned over the recent developments in Turkey, and underlined the importance of secularism for all faiths. Yıldız said that everyone should be able practice their faith freely, and the state cannot side with one particular group. Yıldız noted that some pastors have been linked with the Gülen movement and arrested, and expressed his desire for Christian children in Turkey to have a bright future.
‘CHRISTIANS HAVE BEEN TARGETED’
Pastor Yıldız recalled recent statements criticizing the celebration of Christmas and said that such statements vilify Christians and reinforce negative perceptions about his community. Yıldız said that the state did not take the necessary precautions on this issue, and Christian citizens were targeted by a negative campaign that included discriminatory posters on the streets of Van. Yıldız emphasized the importance of peoples’ fraternity, and noted that celebrating the religious holiday of different groups does not threaten the country but strengthens the unity of citizens.
‘LETS CREATE THE CONDITIONS FOR COEXISTENCE'
Yıldız stated that radicalism is on the rise and members of non-Muslim faiths are being physically and verbally attacked recently. Lastly, Yıldız called upon everyone to watch out for radical groups and practice their religion in a fraternal, peaceful and respectful manner.
