People returning home after the 80 days of a so-called curfew in Cizre were met with hundreds of demolished houses. After the burning alive of over 150 people in basements, all the furniture in the houses still standing were plundered.
In an interview to the ANF, Cizre Municipality Co-mayor Kadir Kunur called upon the Kurdish people to display solidarity so Cizre can adapt to daily life.
'WE ARE WORKING WITH THE REGION’S MUNICIPALITIES'
Kunur, stating that they have started working with the GABB (Union of South Eastern Anatolia Municipalities) for the repairing of hundreds of houses, gave this statement:
“With the lifting of the curfew in Cizre, the magnitude of damage inflicted on our district has come to light. An atrocity focused on destruction occurred in Cizre in every sense of the word. No houses were left undamaged, undemolished. We as the municipality have mobilized to repair houses with minor damage and the infrastructure so our people can return to their homes. We have found that the removal of this damage is not something that we or the neighboring municipalities can handle only with our resources, so we applied to the GABB Union of Municipalities for urgent aid. They showed the necessary sensitivity on this as well. Underground potable water and sewage units from Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van metropolitan municipalities are working in Cizre as we speak. This work has reached a certain point now. We can provide services in 70% of our district as of today. The judicial authorities are yet to run a healthy investigation in the area known as the “basements of atrocity”, so we can’t do much work in that area. We are still conducting correspondence for the gathering of legal evidence.”
'COME TO CİZRE'
Stressing that everybody should see the atrocity in Cizre with their own eyes, Kunur said, “We are calling on every NGO and every political party to come here to witness the atrocities Cizre people have endured, with their own eyes. In short, we are expecting all Kurdish people to come to Cizre. They should come and see this atrocity for themselves.”
'CİZRE RESIDENTS HAVE NO APPLIANCES LEFT'
Co-Mayor Kadir Kunur, pointing out that all houses were plundered during the “curfew” and calling for solidarity from everybody so Cizre’s daily needs can be met, said “There were no usable food left in any homes in Cizre. There are no appliances left. The fridges, washing machines, stoves have all been destroyed. As we all know, the summer is extremely hot in Cizre. That is why the people of Cizre will face tremendous difficulty without fridges in approximately one month. 70 thousand people are left without basic appliances. For this reason, it would help daily life here tremendously if our people outside of Cizre would send a fridge or a washing machine for every household.”
