Co-mayors of Silopi's Başverimli town have been jailed.
Co-mayors of Silopi's Başverimli town have been jailed.
Rabia Takas and Tahir Aytış, Co-mayors of Başverimli town in Şırnak's Silopi district, had been taken into custody the day before.
After procedures at police headquarters, Takas, Aytış and two other municipal employees detained alongside them were referred to prosecutor's office to give their statements.
The municipal employees, Abdülvahit Avar and Haşim Bilgin, were released while the co-mayors were remanded in custody for alleged “membership to a terrorist organization” and “spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization”.
The co-mayors were jailed due to their speeches during a Newroz event and for allegedly “providing YPS militants with construction equipment to dig trenches”.
