The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) held its 12th Extraordinary Congress between May 5 and 7 following Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 ‘Call for Peace and a Democratic Society’.
According to the final declaration of the congress, published by ANF on Monday, "the 12th Congress resolved to dissolve the PKK’s organizational structure and end the armed struggle, with the implementation process to be managed and led by Leader Apo [Abdullah Öcalan]. All activities conducted under the PKK name have therefore been concluded."
Deputy Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region, Qubad Talabani, issued a statement regarding the final declaration of the PKK's 12th Extraordinary Congress.
“With its 12th Congress, the PKK has fulfilled its responsibility towards the peace process in Turkey and opened the door to a new phase,” Talabani said.
Talabani added, “I hope that the Turkish government, legal institutions, and political parties will seize this opportunity to resolve the Kurdish issue through legal and peaceful means.”
