Destruction continues in Sur

Police forces attacked the people who refused to evacuate their houses in the Alipaşa neighbourhood of Amed's Sur district. Demolition of the houses continued forcibly afterwards, while the residents were still sitting inside their homes.

The demolition recently started in Alipaşa and Lalebey neighbourhoods of Amed’s historic Sur district continues. Many houses have been torn down already, and following the destruction of the Alipaşa Mourning House the day before, an attempt was made yesterday to demolish houses where still some children were inside, in addition to the owners' properties.

The people who showed their anger and kept resisting were attacked by the police with pepper spray and water cannons. Two people were taken into custody during the attacks. The destruction of the neighbourhoods, which have been stormed by dozens of policemen, was initiated without having the houses evacuated.

POLICE ATTACKED THE RESISTING CIVILIANS

Ayşan Gün and her children, who resisted against the demolition of their home while all the goods of the family were still inside, were battered by Turkish police in the morning. Ayşan, who suffers from diabetes, fainted as she was affected by the pepper gas the police were using randomly. Two of her sons were taken into custody and taken to the Çarşı police station.

THEY WITHHOLD WATER, AND POUR IT ON THE RUBBLE!

Those houses, which were deprived of water and electricity supply for months, are now showered with water from the tanks as they are being torn down. The people had the following to say on this destruction policy: "They are now pouring the water which they withheld from the families for months on the debris of the houses".

The people that are resisting against the demolition of Sur are continuing to resist inside their houses despite the damage the excavators have already caused.

THE TRUSTEE COMES TO SUR

Bilal Özkan, who was appointed trustee to the DBP-held Municipality of Sur, came to Sur to examine the area in question, accompanied by dozens of special forces police. The arrival of the trustee caused some anger.
