Former co-mayors of Hakkari released from prison

Former co-mayors of Hakkari, Dilek Hatipoğlu and Nurullah Çiftçi, were released from prisons after almost 10 years.

Former co-mayors of Hakkari (Colemêrg), Dilek Hatipoğlu and Nurullah Çiftçi, who were detained for participating in the "self-government" statement made in Hakkari center on 14 August 2015, were sent to prison on 23 August 2015 by the Hakkari 2nd High Criminal Court. They were sentenced to 15 years each on the charge of "disrupting the unity and solidarity of the State" on 25 March 2016.

The 16th Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the sentences given to the co-chairs and the 8 people they were tried with. In the retrial, on 26 January 2018, the co-mayors were sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison.

The co-chairs' lawyers applied to the Constitutional Court (AYM) on the grounds that "the right to trial within a reasonable time, the principle of face-to-face, and the right to personal freedom and security were violated."

The Constitutional Court ruled that the co-chairs suffered a "violation of the right to a fair trial" and decided for a retrial. The file was re-sent to Hakkari 2nd High Criminal Court. The former co-mayors were tried again and sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison each. Hatipoğlu, who had been in many different prisons for about 10 years, was released from Ankara Sincan Women's Closed Prison, and Çiftçi was released from Diyarbakır High Security Prison.
