General strike brings East Kurdistan to a halt

Today a general strike has been declared in East Kurdistan against last Sunday executions. Life came at a standstill. The cities of Mahabad and Sine were the first to get to a complete halt follows by all of the cities and towns. Shops remained closed, nobody went to work or school.

EMPTY STREETS IN SINE

The Iranian regime has declared the emergency rule in Sine and transferred thousands of soldiers to the city. And indeed only soldiers and police are seen on the streets. Eyewitnesses report that the people are protesting in their houses wearing black clothes. By midday young people took to the streets and started to demonstrate. Clashes erupted when young people were assaulted by state security forces in Kemerbendi; at least 2 people were reported injured.

SHUTTERS DOWN IN MAHABAD

In the city of Mahabad, life came to a halt because of the general strike: all shops and markets were closed. Some banks and governmental institutions continued working until they were warned by locals to shut down. They were told that if they keep working, their buildings will be set on fire.

Strike is being reported in Seqiz, Kamyaran, Qurwe, Bane, Meriwan, Þino, Diwandere, Bokan, Nexede, Bicar and Mako.

STRIKE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF URMIYE

Students went on strike at the university of Urmiye as well as in other Iranian universities (Tehran, Beheþtî, Elame Tebatebayî, Terbiyet Muelim, Þehîd Recayî, Emîr Kebîr, Xwace Nesîh, Þerîf, Azadî, Tahran –Navned, Kirman, Zahîdan, Bûelî Hemedan, Zencan, Qezwîn, Sine, Tewrêz, Kirmaþan, Îlam and Mehabad). In Meriwan 15 students have been detained.
