Graves of PKK members attacked in Iğdır

Racist attacks on the cemeteries of Kurdish freedom fighters continue across Turkey.

Following the recent desecration of HPG guerrillas in Van, graves of ARGK guerrillas have been attacked in Iğdır this time.

People's Liberation Army of Kurdistan (ARGK) guerrilla M. Emin Çelik had lost his life alongside 4 comrades of his in a clash in Iğdır on 27 September 1995. Çelik and his comrades were then laid to rest in Iğdır. Çelik’s family travelled from Mersin to Iğdır to visit his grave for 22 years since.

During the last visit, Çelik family went to the cemetery to find the graves of ARGK guerrillas desecrated. Names of the guerrillas on the headstones had been erased.

ARGK guerrilla’s brother Canşah Çelik said; “We buried my brother in Iğdır pursuant to his last will, which was “bury me in the land that I died for”. I go to Iğdır and visit his grave on 27 September every year since 1996. Still, we did not face with such an incident during the 90’s even.”

Canşah Çelik said the headstones of ARGK guerrillas were desecrated and their names were erased, adding; “Even if this system takes us out of our graves, exposes corpses and drags dead bodies on the streets, this people will never give up on their longing for freedom. If this system resorts to attacks on graves to take revenge, that means it is finished. I will not let this go. These are planned and systematic attacks, and the product of a policy. I reiterate my call to our families; we have to act together. Our values are a legacy left to us. We were never afraid, and we will never be.”
