Guerrilla Zagros Cûdî fell as a martyr in clashes with Turkish operational units in the Kurdish province of Van (Wan). The People's Defense Forces (HPG) said in a statement that clashes occurred on 24 September in the Masîro area in the district town of Çatak (Şax).
The HPG expressed condolences to the relatives of Zagros Cûdî and the Kurdish people. The organization provided the following information about the fallen guerrilla:
Code name: Zagros Cûdî
First and last name: Mehdi Uysal
Place of birth: Şırnak
Names of mother and father: Fatma - Mehmet Emin
Date and place of death: Van
Zagros Cûdî was born in Şırnak (Şirnex) into a family deeply rooted in the Kurdish liberation struggle. The region in which he grew up is one of those in Northern Kurdistan where the Turkish state's dirty war in the 1990s was particularly bloody and the social resistance and armed struggle of the PKK against it was very strong. This reality shaped Zagros Cûdî.
Due to his early experiences of war, he became politicized at an early age, and as an adolescent he became involved in the youth movement. He was particularly concerned with the youth's fight against so-called special warfare methods. Key elements of this anti-Kurdish warfare include, among others, the massive promotion of drug use and prostitution in order to manipulate young people and alienate them from politics.
Zagros Cûdî joined the guerrillas in 2015. In that year, the regime in Ankara had begun to implement the "destruction plan" ("Çöktürme Planı") that had been developed in 2014, during the talks process with Abdullah Öcalan.
After practical training in the Besta region, he initially fought in various areas of Botan. He first moved to the front against the Islamic State, and then took part in the resistance for self-government in Şırnak. He then moved to the Medya Defense Areas and was deployed there in the resistance against the Turkish occupation of South Kurdistan. For some time now, he had been back in North Kurdistan at his own request. The HPG paid tribute to Zagros Cûdî as a "courageous and selfless apoist who represented the militancy of the PKK until the end. Hevalê Zagros has immortalized his name in the history of the resistance."
