The Turkish army's war of aggression in the Medya Defense Zones of southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq), launched on April 17, continues with the support of the KDP-led autonomous government in Hewlêr (Erbil). Guerrilla resistance to the occupation offensive also continues unabated. According to an overview of war events in the region released by the press office of the People's Defense Forces (HPG) on Friday, at least three Turkish soldiers were killed in guerrilla actions in Zap on Thursday. Another soldier was injured.
One of the three military personnel was killed in the course of a coordinated attack at Kuro Jahro, according to the HPG statement. The other two soldiers were shot dead during sniper actions in the Çiyareş resistance area. HPG reported that Turkey responded to these casualties with a "massive use" of chemical warfare agents as well as explosives attacks. A third guerrilla action on the same day targeted occupation forces in the Şehîd Şahîn area. While the targets were "effectively" taken under fire, there is no confirmed information on the outcome of the action.
On Wednesday night, guerrillas targeted two Turkish Air Force helicopters that were on an attack flight on Kuro Jahro. Both aircraft were subsequently forced to turn back. On the other hand, a drone sent into the air on the afternoon of May 4 from a KDP base near Akrê for reconnaissance over guerrilla areas in the Gare region was shot down that same evening. "At around 4 a.m. local time on Thursday morning, the scene was massively bombed by Turkish fighter jets with the aim of completely destroying the drone," HPG stated.
HPG further emphasized that the Turkish army's air strikes and artillery attacks continue uninterrupted in other regions of the Medya Defense Zones. In Gare, the slopes of Derîyê Hirçê were attacked by fighter jets last night and early this morning. The Girê Cûdî area was bombed twice last night by warplanes and helicopters. Shells fired by Turkish border guards hit the slopes of Girê Şekîf in Xakurke in the afternoon. In Avaşîn, the Werxelê resistance area was attacked by attack helicopters. In Zap, simultaneous air and ground attacks targeted Şehîd Şahîn, Kurojahro, Şehîd Harûn, Şehîd Cûdî, Şikefta Birîndara, Karker, Girê Cehennem, Çiyareş and Çemço late in the evening. The HPG registered a total of nine waves of attacks there.
