The hunger strike in Sulaymaniyah has been launched by the Mesopotamian Workers Association to support the action of HDP Hakkari MP, Leyla Güven, who is demanding the end of the isolation imposed on Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The Hakkari MP has been on hunger strike since 7 November in Amed prison.
As support for the hunger strike grows, activists spend time reading political discussions, poetry and singing songs.
Nahide Yildiz, one of the activists, told ROJ news about the purpose of the action. “Women - she said - should be more involved in the action. We must break isolation with our actions and live freely with our Leader.”
Şervan Yıldırım, another activist, pointed out to the hunger strike initiated in Rojhılatê (Western) Kurdistan and said: “I find these actions important and valuable. The public should be more involved in the actions. Because the isolation regime imposed on Leader Apo is heavier by the day.”
Calling on the Kurdish people, Yıldırım said: “Kurdish people can stop attacks against Kirkuk, Shengal, Mexmur and Rojava if we unite. Unity is actually the way to create conditions that can break the isolation imposed on Leader Apo.”
