Historically named Beyd Zabdey and Hezex (Babayiğit), İdil was put through a massacre and genocide 7 times in its history but managed to revive itself after each massacre.
The town of İdil experienced the 8th and most recent massacre during the 44 days-long curfew that was announced on February 16, and is now reviving as it continues to defend its values. Residents of İdil remember from previous massacres that the price of defending their values is resistance, and have began reconstruction efforts as they moved back to their houses within the areas of self-rule.
Turgut Özal and Yeni neighborhoods were the centers of resistance and destruction, and their residents had migrated to other towns during the curfew. After the ending of the siege, however, the residents of these neighborhoods moved back and began to clean and repair their houses.
Locals whose houses were destroyed completely are requesting for tents that they could put up in their gardens for accommodation purposes, and the owners of damaged houses are waiting for solidarity for the repairing of their houses.
Rojava Solidarity Association began distributing food in the town, and the committee of lawyers and engineers has begun recording the destruction and loss in the region. In this article, we depict the residents of İdil who are trying to survive in their gardens and burnt houses through photos.
