Journalist Deniz Fırat commemorated in Maxmur

Journalist Deniz Fırat who was martyred during the ISIS attacks in Maxmur in 2014 was commemorated in an event held in the refugee camp.

Journalist Deniz Fırat was commemorated on the 8th anniversary of her martyrdom in an event held in Maxmur Refugee Camp in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).

The Kurdish journalist’s friends and dozens of camp residents attended the commemoration event organized by the Martyrs' Families Association.

Following a moment of silence, Berivan Tunç delivered a speech on behalf of Fırat’s colleagues.

Tunç emphasized Deniz Fırat's struggle for the freedom of the Kurdish people, recalling that she had fallen a martyr during the ISIS attacks. “We will follow in the footsteps of Martyr Deniz until the end,” Tunç added.

Fırat’s mother, Sultan Yıldıztan, made the following speech and said: “I commemorate all the martyrs of the free press in the person of Martyr Deniz. Our family will always follow in the footsteps of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the martyrs,” Yıldıztan said.

Kurdish journalist Deniz Firat (Methiye Yildiztan) came from the province of Van in North Kurdistan and lived with her family in Maxmur refugee camp in South Kurdistan. In August 2014, ISIS attacked Maxmur as well as the Yazidi settlement area of Shengal and other places. The camp had to be evacuated. Deniz Firat reported on site for ANF and the Kurdish TV stations Stêrk TV and Ronahî TV. She fell a martyr on 8 August.
