KDP embargo on Maxmur continues

Closing the Maxmur-Hewler road, KDP has imposed an embargo on Maxmur Refugee Camp for 13 days.

After the attack in a restaurant in Hewlêr targeting Turkish consulate employees which left three people dead on July 17, the KDP asayish (Security) forces closed the Hewlêr-Kirkuk, Hewlêr-Sulaymaniyah and Hewlêr-Maxmur roads to traffic.

While the other roads were reopened a few hours after the attack, the road to Maxmur has remained closed since.

The Rüstem Cudi Refugee Camp in Maxmur is also subjected to an embargo and access from Maxmur to Hewler has been strictly denied for 13 days.

No one is allowed to leave the Maxmur camp, including those who work in Hewler and severely ill residents of the camp that need urgent care.

The United Nations and the Iraqi government are not taking any step for the removal of the embargo.

In the wake of the attack, KDP asayish raided the homes of several families in Maxmur. The aftermath of two of them still remains unclear.

On the other hand, reconnaissance and helicopter activity over the camp continues.
