KNK calls for solidarity with the victims of the devastating fire in North Kurdistan

The KNK expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the fire between Amed and Mardin and to the people of Kurdistan and called on the public and aid organisations to show solidarity with the victims.

The Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) Executive Council made a written statement on the fire that erupted in the villages of Çınar district of Amed and Mazıdağı district of Mardin on Thursday night.

The KNK said thay share the grief of the people of the region and the victims due to the disaster in which at least 14 people lost their lives, over 70 others were injured, thousands of animals perished and people's living spaces were burnt.

"We express our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and all Kurdistan people, and a speedy recovery to the wounded,” the statement said.

According to the KNK, it is no coincidence that such a major disaster occurred: “According to the information coming from the region, even if there is no intent, negligence, deficiencies and defects in the management of state institutions have been the cause of this great disaster. Eyewitnesses and citizens in the neighbourhood say that the fire started and spread from electricity poles. The local people have repeatedly warned the government authorities that these electricity poles were damaged and needed to be repaired. However, the relevant institutions did not take measures. These shortcomings and mistakes continue after the incident. The responsible teams did not mobilise on time and the necessary interventions were not made on time. That is why the disaster has grown even bigger."

KNK pointed out that state institutions and the AKP-MHP government are responsible for the disaster and the incident must be investigated. "Those responsible must be exposed and held to account. In addition, the damages and losses of the victims must be compensated. The AKP-MHP government is responsible for the disaster, and we strongly condemn all those responsible".

Promising solidarity with those affected, KNK called on all the people of Kurdistan and aid organisations to go to the region and take care of the victims.
